Debunking Myths of Senior Living

Jul 21, 2022 | Senior Living and Health | 0 comments

We all have an idea of what a senior living community looks and feels like. Some of us rely on popular portrayals of retirement communities – like in movies or television. Others have one isolated experience that colors their view of senior living. In most cases, our references are outdated or our scope too narrow to really understand the experience of living in a retirement community.

“Stereotypes of senior living persist, but the industry is innovative and diverse,” says Marie Dunn, Director of Sales and Marketing at WhiteStone. “Senior living communities offer older adults the opportunity to live in an engaged way with increased choice, freedom, and connection to like-minded people.”

Below, we have debunked five common myths about senior living.

MYTH: Senior Living is for “old people” who need medical support.

FACT: Senior living elevates the lifestyle of active, independent seniors.

If you need personal support or senior care, you can certainly find that at a senior living community. However, this is not a requirement. In fact, there is independent living for active seniors who want daily opportunities for social interaction, recreation and wellness activities.

When you transition into independent living, you are also freed from chores and maintenance responsibilities like:

  • Housekeeping
  • Indoor and outdoor maintenance
  • Landscaping and lawn care
  • Meal preparation (if you so choose)

MYTH: I will have to leave my family and friends behind.

FACT: At a senior living community, you can expand your networks and stay connected with your loved ones.

Family and friends are a welcome part of the community at WhiteStone. We offer two-bedroom options that could accommodate a visitor, and we offer many communal spaces where you can host your loved ones. You can also use our shuttle services to meet with friends and family at local establishments or at their homes for special events.

MYTH: I will be bored and stuck inside.

FACT: Senior living communities facilitate activities, events and outings for recreation, wellness and personal development.

There are countless opportunities for you to pursue interests, learn new skills, embrace new experiences, and be active in your community. At WhiteStone, we have an in-depth calendar of events and take interested residents on excursions through North Carolina (and beyond).

Our amenities allow for both activity and leisure:

  • Indoor pool and fitness center
  • Library
  • Salon/Spa
  • Woodworking shop
  • Art studio
  • Community garden

MYTH: You have to be a Mason to live at WhiteStone.

FACT: WhiteStone is open to all who desire an active retirement lifestyle and peace of mind for the future.

We are a welcoming community that serves all seniors seeking independent living, memory care, skilled nursing, in-home care or rehabilitation. Soon, we will also offer assisted living.

MYTH: My residence at WhiteStone will be small and lack privacy.

FACT: At WhiteStone, residents can choose from private and spacious homes, cottages or apartments.

WhiteStone has a residence that fits your lifestyle and budget.
